Cristiano Ronaldo's Absence from Diogo Jota's Funeral

Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of the Portugal national team, was absent from the funeral of his teammate Diogo Jota, who recently lost his life in a traffic accident. Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward, and his brother André were killed in the early hours of Thursday night in northwest Spain and were laid to rest on Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar in a private ceremony.

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, who had married just two weeks prior, along with their three children, attended the service alongside a delegation from Liverpool, including Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, who brought wreaths into the church. Several of his national team teammates were also present, including Bruno Fernandes, captain of Manchester United, and Bernardo Silva of Manchester City, along with national team coach Roberto Martinez.

Ruben Neves, who played for Al Ahly in the Club World Cup in the United States, traveled to Portugal to pay his respects to his close friend and was one of those who carried Jota’s coffin into the church.

However, Ronaldo’s absence at the ceremony has sparked dissatisfaction in Portugal. Prominent journalist Antonio Ribeiro Cristovao remarked, “He is the captain of the national team. Many expected him to attend. Diogo Jota was part of the team, and there may be reasons we are unaware of. If he is not attending, he should explain why; he has that responsibility. He is the captain.”

This week, Ronaldo was spotted enjoying his summer vacation on the Spanish island of Mallorca, which has reportedly become a favored holiday destination for the 39-year-old player. His absence from Diogo Jota’s funeral has attracted significant attention and raised questions regarding his personal and social commitments.
