Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and a key figure in the INDIA bloc, recently announced that if his coalition forms the government in Bihar, all “needy” women will receive the full annual payment of ₹30,000 under the Mai Bahin Yojana on Makar Sankranti, instead of monthly ₹2,500 installments. He also pledged permanent jobs for Jeevika Didis, bonuses for farmers, and free electricity for irrigation.
Bihar remains one of India’s least developed states, struggling with poverty, gender inequality, and migration. In this context, direct financial support for women could improve household welfare and empower them socially and psychologically. A lump-sum payment may allow women to invest in small businesses, farming, or education, offering both economic relief and dignity.
Choosing Makar Sankranti—a festival symbolizing renewal and prosperity—adds cultural and emotional value to the scheme, linking economic assistance to hope and community spirit.
Critics, however, caution that such welfare programs risk creating dependency if not supported by sustainable funding and job opportunities. Effective implementation and training initiatives are essential to ensure the program fosters long-term empowerment rather than short-term populism.
Beyond economics, the Mai Bahin Yojana could redefine women’s roles in Bihar’s traditional society. Financial independence strengthens their voice in family decisions and enhances education and health outcomes for their children. The inclusion of Jeevika Didis—self-help groups that have already proven successful—further promotes solidarity and self-reliance among women.
